Enlighten Me - The sustainable beauty of lightweight porcelain
The idea behind Enlight is that small changes can add up to big savings when it comes to fuel and CO2 emissions. Less aircraft weight leads to lower fuel usage, which in turn reduces costs and emissions.
Enlight’s lightweight porcelain series, for example, was born from this need for weight savings combined with a trend towards using more elegant shapes onboard. Each piece was designed and engineered with the end goal of having a lower material weight while upholding the strength, durability, and look of traditional hard porcelain.
To accomplish this, a strengthening agent was used to make the lightweight items able to withstand the similar impact of traditional porcelain. In addition, a hard, scratch-resistant surface makes the lightweight porcelain well-suited for industrial catering — however with the look and feel of fine bone china.
After several years of successful commercial operations, lightweight porcelain is increasingly seen as a best practice of the future. What started as a material experiment has turned into a viable product range, with weight savings of up to 25 percent. In addition, by using lightweight porcelain on an A380, an airline can save up to 22 tons of fuel per year — which translates to about 69 tons of CO2 emissions- savings annually.
